William A Mackay
Double Bass Maker
I am a double bass maker based in the highlands of Scotland.
For a long time I have been interested by the interaction of player, materials and the dynamic response possible particularly on an acoustic instrument. I made my first acoustic instrument under the instruction of Norman Reed in Totnes Devon in 1995, himself a maker of viol family instruments, and it was there that I became interested in double bass. In my final year at Newark violin school in 2011 I decided I would like to specialise in making double bass. That year I returned home to Caithness to establish my workshop.
Maintaining traditional hand skills and producing high quality instruments that sound well and play nicely are all important factors in my work.
