BVMA Violin Restoration Course with Bow Making and Restoration

  • Halsway Manor TA4 4BA England (map)

5 1/2 day course + 1 1/2 day conference on wood & sound

9th to 16th October 2022 Halsway Manor.

This year’s main BVMA course will be very similar to our previous courses at West Dean, with the same tutors as 3 years ago.

The course starts on Sunday at 4pm with the practical element finishing before lunch on Saturday. This is followed by a 1 1/2 day BVMA conference on wood and sound, a concert and party.

This conference will be open to all BVMA members as a separate event but is included in the course.

For the Violin Restoration side, the tutors will be Warren Bailey, Gudrun Kremeier and Almuth MacWilliams. Places will be limited to 18.

All participants will bring their own projects to work on.

For the Bow side, the tutors will be Derek Wilson, Evan Orman and Tim Baker. Restorations will again be guided by the projects that participants bring. For the Making side we will be concentrating on choice of wood with regard to sound and playing qualities. Places will be limited to 10, mostly on a first come, first served basis but also to create a good balance between making and restoration.

The cost of the course will be from £900 to £1100 depending on room choice, to include all teaching, accommodation and food. There will also be a camping or camper van option for £800.

We will be inviting those who we have space for, to pay a deposit in early May’  with the remaining balance by the end of July.

In addition, 2 bursaries are available from the BVMA covering half the cost of the course.
