Marc Soubeyran was born and brought up in Lyon, France. He served his apprenticeship at the Swiss violin making school. From 1981-87 he worked at Edward Withers, London, for Dietrich Kessler, making over 25 violas da gamba for him, as well as repairing instruments of the violin family, and furthering his knowledge of period instruments.

From 1987-2001 he successfully ran his own business in London, during which time he was instrumental in setting up the British Violin Making Association (BVMA), holding the first post of Chairman for 6 years.

He relocated to Ludlow in 2001, from where he offers the following services:

· New instruments
· Repairs & restorations
· Bow rehairs & small repairs, including a postal service
· Advice, expertise & valuations
· Rental
· Specialised chin rest

As a leading exponent in the field of setting up and sound adjustment for both old and new instruments, his services have been much sought after by professional musicians.

Marc Soubeyran gives great attention to historical detail in the setting up of his instruments of the violin or viola da gamba family. A vast array of ideas and experience come together in the making of each one of his instruments:

· Choice of model
· Musicians’ special needs and requirements
· Selection of timber
· Over 25 years practical workshop experience
· Development of style, through observation and study of old and new instruments
· Regular contacts and exchanges with musicians, and violin making colleagues
