As a professional maker since 1980, I have made over 200 instruments. My work is informed by a keen interest in music and by many contacts with professional musicians. As well as being an amateur cellist, I play an active role in organising concerts for Manchester Chamber Concerts Society.

Each aspect of making the instruments is carefully considered. I keep a stock of well-seasoned wood which I choose myself from woodyards in France and Germany. I have developed a range of models based on classical instruments to take into account players’ differing needs as regards tone quality, size and feel, as well as my own models for small-sized violins and violas. I use high quality traditional oil varnish, coloured with pigments produced to historical recipes, and I set up my instruments with quality handmade fittings.

Players comment that my instruments sound rich and powerful, as well as being even, responsive and easy to play. I usually have instruments available to try and also welcome commissions.

My instruments are played by members of the following orchestras: London Philharmonic, Hallé, Bournemouth Symphony, Norwegian Radio, Opera North, English National Ballet and Scottish Ensemble, as well as freelance players and students in the UK and USA, Luxembourg, Germany, Denmark and Norway. The Guildhall School of Music and Chetham’s School of Music have both commissioned a number of instruments for loan to their students.

I studied at the Newark School of Violin Making from 1977-80 and subsequently set up my own workshop in Leicestershire before moving to Manchester in 1995.
