Edward Gaut started his career in the violin industry at age 16 when enrolling on the course at the Newark & Sherwood School of Violin Making where he graduated 4 years later.
From there he worked abroad and then in London at Frederick Phelps restoring instruments and completing many re-hairs for professional players in the orchestras.
In 2004 Edward Gaut Violins was established catering for all players needs and in 2006 moved to Bristol where at 6 Chatsworth Road fine violins are lovingly restored and crafted from the finest materials nature can produce.
All the wood used is meticulously chosen for tonal qualities and seasoned for at least 7 years before being made into an instrument and sympathetically finished in one of my variety of varnishes tinted with home made pigments. Commissions are welcome where the owner has a choice of model and finish. Any enquiries welcome for repair, making, sales or advice.

Tim Miller. Owner of the ‘Lambert’ copy Viola D’amore made by Edward Gaut
2005

"I’ve commissioned instrument from some celebrated makers in my time and I’m more than happy to say that the Viola D’amore Edward copied for me from a beautiful original in the Victoria And Albert Museum is musically delightful, extremely responsive and subtle, having for example, the silvery brass resonance’s in the sympathetic strings which are seductive and so discretely ‘nocturnal’ for the slow movements of the Vivaldi concerti, easy under the hand and bow, meaning comfortable and light to play and a tour de force of recreation.
I cannot believe that the superb Lambert original could offer me more, musically or artistically than Edward’s copy of it and his painstaking meticulousness has resulted in a work of ‘Fine Art’ which after my time, I’m sure will be fought for in the sales rooms.
With much thanks, Tim Miller."
