Specialism: Violin and viola maker, repairer and restorer Contact: Buxton Violin Shop 2, Scarsdale Place Buxton, Derbyshire SK17 6EF UK
Colin Cross graduated from the Newark School of Violin Making, with a Distinction, in 1989 and, since then, has worked extensively as a restorer, repairer and maker. As a maker, he specialises in violins and violas with a tonal quality as rich and individual as their texture and finish. Colin also has a nation-wide reputation for sensitive and sympathetic restoration and repair work. Colin’s instruments are bought and played by principal musicians in many national orchestras including the Opera North, Liverpool Philharmonic and the Halle. Colin runs a small shop in the Peak District market town of Buxton where he sells his own violins and violas and also keeps a wide stock of instruments by other makers, and in all price ranges. His workshop, on the same site, is where he carries out set-ups, bow re-hairing, and renovates and repairs violins, violas, cellos, double basses and bows, alongside making new instruments. ‘Unlike any other violin I’ve ever played: unique!’ Susanne Stanzeleit 2005 ‘I’ve tried most modern makers’ violins but my Colin Cross instrument still suits me best’ Graham Clark 2004 ‘Unfailingly reliable and sensitive renovations and repairs. He cares as much about my Double Bass as I do’ John Thorne 2004 | ||||||
